YOUR OBJECTIVE COMES FIRST
Examine technical judgment and executive communication.
Give the leadership mandate as much attention as the title.
The Arizona Commerce Authority highlights aerospace, manufacturing, bioscience, business services and technology as key sectors. When a role supports engineering handoffs for an equipment build, the title is only a starting point. Use a build configuration, component reference and test result to explain the work, and identify the decisions shared with engineering, production and quality. Who accepts a configuration change before it reaches the build team?
Arizona Commerce Authority: industry context ↗01Agree the decisions the leader will own
Set the relationship among the board, founder, executive sponsor and functional team. Clarify budget authority, priorities and the issues that remain reserved for others. An executive title without workable decision authority creates uncertainty for both the organization and candidates.
02Connect the mandate to the business stage
Distinguish building a function, improving an established operation and leading a change through an existing organization. Identify what must be preserved and what the leader is expected to challenge. Comparable stage and operating experience can be more revealing than a familiar company name. Working example: Leadership mandate and technical decision map.
03Structure confidential stakeholder assessment
Agree who participates, when information can be shared and how feedback is recorded. Assign leadership judgment, functional expertise and stakeholder management to different conversations. Ask for examples that distinguish the candidate’s own decisions from the wider team’s results. For engineering handoffs for an equipment build, agree how engineering, production and quality contribute where those functions are involved.
04Plan the transition into authority
Explain reporting relationships, unresolved priorities and the support available during the transition. Surface differences between the mandate and candidate expectations before an offer. Set out how the new leader will receive context and establish working relationships with the team. Review check: Stakeholders agree which decisions transfer to the leader.
