YOUR OBJECTIVE COMES FIRST
Examine continuity of key customer and team relationships.
Give the leadership mandate as much attention as the title.
Indiana’s economic development corporation describes a focus on automotive, life sciences and energy, with support for manufacturing, logistics and information technology. When a role supports manufacturing quality and change review, the title is only a starting point. Use a production change, quality observation and release decision to explain the work, and identify the decisions shared with production, engineering and quality review. Which control must be rechecked when the operating process changes?
Indiana Economic Development Corporation: industry context ↗01Agree the decisions the leader will own
Set the relationship among the board, founder, executive sponsor and functional team. Clarify budget authority, priorities and the issues that remain reserved for others. An executive title without workable decision authority creates uncertainty for both the organization and candidates.
02Connect the mandate to the business stage
Distinguish building a function, improving an established operation and leading a change through an existing organization. Identify what must be preserved and what the leader is expected to challenge. Comparable stage and operating experience can be more revealing than a familiar company name. Working example: Transition timetable and decision handover.
03Structure confidential stakeholder assessment
Agree who participates, when information can be shared and how feedback is recorded. Assign leadership judgment, functional expertise and stakeholder management to different conversations. Ask for examples that distinguish the candidate’s own decisions from the wider team’s results. For manufacturing quality and change review, agree how production, engineering and quality review contribute where those functions are involved.
04Plan the transition into authority
Explain reporting relationships, unresolved priorities and the support available during the transition. Surface differences between the mandate and candidate expectations before an offer. Set out how the new leader will receive context and establish working relationships with the team. Review check: Candidates and sponsors understand the transition sequence.
