YOUR OBJECTIVE COMES FIRST
Order-to-ERP connection
Give each system a clear responsibility in the workflow.
Kentucky’s Cabinet for Economic Development lists automotive, aerospace, food and beverage, logistics and manufacturing among its top industries. A useful scoping example is plant-to-distribution release coordination. Follow a production release, shipping instruction and distribution acknowledgement through the work with plant operations, shipping and distribution coordination. A shipping change may be approved after a release has already reached dispatch. How is an approved shipping change acknowledged by the next team?
Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development: industry context ↗01Agree which record is authoritative
Identify the owner of customer details, orders, status and other shared fields. Define the permitted direction of change and how conflicts are resolved. A field mapping should explain its business meaning rather than assume similar labels describe the same value.
02Confirm the supported interface
Review authentication, permissions, available endpoints, rate limits and source documentation. Establish how new and changed records are identified. Record any restriction that would require a vendor decision before promising a real-time connection. Working example: An order contract and submission acknowledgment.
03Design for repeated and partial work
Use stable references to distinguish a new transaction from a retry. Document dependencies among updates and the response that confirms completion. If one step succeeds and another fails, staff need a recovery path that preserves the accepted record. For plant-to-distribution release coordination, agree how plant operations, shipping and distribution coordination contribute where those functions are involved.
04Make reconciliation part of support
Keep enough operational detail to locate a failed or mismatched transaction without exposing unnecessary sensitive data. Define reconciliation checks and a named owner for exceptions. Review permission changes, version updates and record-definition changes as ongoing dependencies. Review check: A retry checks the transaction reference before creating another record.
